The German sport fishermen association (VDSF Verband Deutscher Sportfischer),
the ministry for nature conservation (BfN Bundesamt für Naturschutz),
the German angler association (DAV Deutscher Anglerverband) and
the German sport divers association (Verband Deutscher Sporttaucher VDST)
have selected the Lamprey as Fish of the Year 2012.

hanno eletto la Lampreda Pesce dell'anno 2012.
These initiatives confirm a growing attention to wildlife
and aquatic ecosystems and the importance of promoting a holistic awareness
of the nature we all belong to. Here below, for the non german speaking friends, a
summary of the original article appeared in the German website of the VDSF

From the evolutionary point of view, the Lamprey appeared about 400-500 million years ago and
is one of the oldest living vertebrate on earth.
Scientifically, the lampreys are not "fish" but belong to the superclass of Cyclostomata.
Thanks to protective measures, the population of lampreys has
has gradually improved in German waters in recent years.
With the election to fish of year it should be noted that further efforts are to be made
to ensure the survival of individual species.
Lampreys have no jaws but a circular suction mouth, internally toothed and
placed on the lower side of the head. The body is eel-like, and has no scales.
All lampreys spawn in freshwater but while
the Lampetra planeri spend its entire life in fresh water, river and sea lamprey are
anadromous species.
specie anadrome.

the 7 lateral gills, eye and the central nostril.
The German name for lamprey 'Neunauge' (nine-eyed) is very old and derives by superficial observation, the actual eye,
the simple and the lateral seven gill openings
had given the impression that the animal had nine eyes on each side of the body.
Until the nineteenth century the lampreys were still plentiful and representd a much appreciated
source of food. Because of pollution their number is fallen sharply. As a result of the construction
of dams to regulate the flow, the sand banks and gravel areas, typical breeding beds, were covered with
mud and sediment and lampreys have disappeared. Structures that block the courses of the water or fish-ladders
not properly constructed are insurmountable obstacles for lampreys.
If the construction of hydropower plants and dams continue to be promoted, it is general
concern that places where now the population of lampreys has improved, could deteriorate again.
In seguito all'inarginamento e alla costruzione
