Chironomidae (=midges) look similar to mosquitos, however they do not sting.
The wings of midges are shorter than their body, while mosquito wings are slightly longer than their body.
Furthermore, in the resting position Chironomidae raise the forelegs, while mosquitos raise the rear legs.
