Lepidostoma hirtum is the only species of this genus present in continental Europe,

the other species in fact, as the name suggests (tenerifensis) is present only on the Canarian Islands.

In the picture above detail of head and feeding apparatus, remarkable the hairy base of the antennas. This sedge owes its english name (small silver sedge)..

..to the particoular angle to which the light gets reflected on the thick hair of the wings and that appears as a gray tone if observed from the distance.

A closer look reveals instead that the wings are in reality brownish.
