The woodcock covert feathers are fantastic materials for binding wet flies. The barred pattern of these feathers resemble the insect's legs or some wings, while their softness grants the fly a lifelike movement.
In the wings of birds, the covert feathers are located in the apical part of the wing, between the shoulder feathers and the remiges. They cover the base of the remiges and smooth the airflow over the wings.
