River Stura di Lanzo, Piedmont, Italy

For those who pass by Turin, Piedmont (Italy), and may have time and desire to soak some flies in a decent stream, the Stura di Lanzo is a good hint. The place lies 45 minutes by car from Turin, in the Lanzo valley, sorrounded by the Alps. From Turin it is reachable following the signs to the village of Lanzo. The regulation is stricly no kill. The reserve stretches from the Lanzo bridge (after the tunnel on the "strada proviciale") downwards to the Cafasse village.

NO KILL signs delimiting the "Riserva" are to be found along the all stretch. Mind that at the two ends of the reserve the fishing is closed for about 200 meters. The part of the stream which became the no kill reserve has been completely interdict for fishing for several years. No stock fish was ever introduced, thus preserving the local fauna genetic. All the trouts (brown, marmored or hybrids, brook) and graylings are wild.

It is sometimes easy to spot exemplar of 1 kilogram or more sipping tiny insects from the surface, bigger fishes are present as well. The brown trout beside was caught on a hook size 14 with the poli emerger Large plecoptera (stone flies) start showing up in spring, baetis and ecdyonurus are widely present.

A view of the river downstream of the pedestrian bridge. It can be succesfully fished with dry flies and nymphs but do not expect to find easy ready-to-be-caught stoke fish.

Above, streamer fishing at the two-step small dam. These small dams create 2 deep pools and it can be very good hot spot also in case of insect hatch. Mind that it is not allowed to fish standing on any part of the artefact.

The fish way at the dam that was built to let the fish overcome the dike.

A Cottus Gobio found dead on the side of the river, with a deep trout bite on the body. This bottom dweller is one of the favorite pray of the Marmorata trouts. Even though Marmored trouts in size of 1 or 1 1/2 kilo still bite dry flies, when they get bigger they feed almost exclusively on other fish.

In summer caddis hatches can bring the water to "boil" , especially during the Coup de soir. Above a brook trout caught on a sedge pattern.
